John: We’re advisors not to make ourselves better, we’re advisors to make our clients better and to help them live the lives that they want to live to their fullest.
Lisa: As a child, my father was in the ice cream business, so that was always a lot of fun. The business existed long before I ever did, so it's always been in the community. Together, we grew it to a larger national brand than anyone in our family had ever dreamed it would be.
Barry: We grew the company together and worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, years and years and years until we exited the business and had a great time doing it.
Barry: We want to spend the rest of our life giving back the resources that the Lord's blessed us with. And through Schwab Charitable we're able to do that.
John: A donor-advised fund is I like to use the analogy of it's a charitable savings account for clients to give money away over long periods of time. So the life arc of a philanthropist starts with checkbook philanthropy. You're just writing checks, you get something in the mail or you hear about some cause and it sounds right, and then progresses to reciprocal philanthropy. You know, I'll give to yours if you give to mine. Then there's more engaged philanthropy and a lot of times this is triggered by something that happens to you personally. That arc leads to legacy philanthropy, where it's philanthropy that's going to go on beyond them and to the next generation, and probably to generations beyond that. Schwab Charitable can cover and does cover that whole spectrum, that whole journey.
Barry: Our long term goal is we have an amount that we want to give away every year and we want to keep our donor-advised fund going forever for our grandkids, for their grandkids, and so we have a plan of how to do that.
Lisa: We have six children between us, six adult children between us.
Barry: And, uh, 15 beautiful grandbabies and one on the way.
Lisa: And hopefully our plan is for those generations to pass on to the next generation not just the resources, but the values and the strategy around philanthropy and helping people who don't have the resources that they have.
John: You know, it's family and community and philanthropy is just a great tie into all of that. Schwab Charitable donor-advised fund is a really important resource to help you as an adviser, to really deepen your relationship, to deepen the work that you do. This is a difference maker, it really is a difference maker.
