Microfinance ProgramWe recently gave our donors a new way to broaden the charitable impact of their donations. Donors can now recommend that up to ten percent of their Charitable Gift Account balance be used to help guarantee microfinance loans in the developing world. This is the first program of its kind, giving Schwab Charitable donors the ability to help some of the world’s poorest entrepreneurs, while donated assets continue to be invested for potential growth and future granting. In collaboration with Grameen Foundation, and powered by the generosity of our donors, we are nearing the close of the first subscription of this Program. Schwab Charitable expects to deliver $10 million in guarantees for this first phase, creating over 100,000 microloans in several developing markets. Microfinance has had a transformative effect in regions of the world where a $200 loan can literally change someone’s life, providing entrepreneurs with the small amounts of capital they need to build businesses, pulling their families up by the bootstraps and breaking the cycle of poverty.
