Support Relief Efforts for the Victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings

The tragic events at the Boston Marathon have had a devastating effect on the victims and the community at large. In addition to the trauma care that victims received in the days after the bombings, those affected may require support for months to come.

Schwab Charitable has confirmed that the following organizations are providing general relief for victims of the bombings:

American Red Cross: Massachusetts Bay

Salvation Army Massachusetts Division

Boston Medical Center

Massachusetts General Hospital

Trustees of Boston University
To designate funds for The Lu Lingzi Scholarship Fund

Regardless of the charitable organization you may wish to support, we recommend that you review these steps in order to most effectively assist in a time of great need.

Consider making a grant to the organization's general disaster relief fund: This provides the flexibility to use the funds where they are most in need—for a current disaster, ongoing efforts related to a previous disaster, or to prepare so that they can respond quickly to the next disaster.

Send funds instead of items: Donating your unwanted items doesn’t necessarily mean that they are wanted elsewhere, and the cost of transportation may not support a worthwhile donation.

Consider funding prevention instead of relief and continue to give over time: Set up a recurring grant recommendation or sustain giving on your own after the initial disaster attention has died down.

Encourage accountability by the organizations you support: Reach out to your favorite organizations and ask for updates on how the incoming funds are being put to use in response to the disaster.
