Our Fall/Winter Newsletter Feature:
Investing for Charitable Good

Introduction: A Note From Our President

They say that as your body surges with adrenaline in response to a crisis, you become hyper-focused on the threat. Maybe that is a reasonable analogy for the investment environment our staff found themselves in as we launched a project to redesign our investment line-up. The team at Schwab Charitable recruited experts and analysts to advise us on the selection of new investment options, now available in our online Donor Center.
Our goals were to:

• select the "best in class" mutual funds, blind to the provider, expanding beyond Schwab funds,

• select price competitive options, ranging from low-cost index funds to actively-managed funds, with strong track records,

• provide pre-blended asset allocation funds for donors who want the simplest solutions,

• provide single asset class funds, from which donors can select and blend among five asset classes,

• introduce a socially responsible fund that does not compromise investment performance, and

• provide donors with an investment advice tool, especially designed for Charitable Gift Accounts, to make the selection process easier.

That laser-like focus served the team well, and donor feedback has been very favorable. If you have not yet taken advantage of the advice tool (a copy is enclosed) or considered the new investment options, we encourage you to do so.

Despite the tumultuous environment, we have also continued to move ahead with innovations on many fronts, including expanding the Microfinance Guarantee Program and launching a Private Foundation Conversion Service. These are both initiatives to help you to increase the impact and efficiency of your charitable dollars.

We hope our feature article will help to inform your own approach to charitable investing. From all of us at Schwab Charitable, have a peaceful and prosperous holiday season. As always, thank you for making us a part of your philanthropy.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Wright-Violich
President Schwab Charitable
